Would You teach us how to live?
Would You teach us how to breathe?
Because we’re born when the light breaks,
But with moms and dads wondering about answers just as much as we ourselves,
Who will tell us which way to grow?
Because for some reason, we spend our years pacing halls full of classrooms
But no one can tell us what to do when
When our heads are full of knowledge
But our hearts are barren, empty.
Because they tell us what not to do
While we keep rolling into
Rolling into it,
And then they tell us that’s who we are,
Just trapped in the dark.
Would you teach us how to live?
Would you teach us how to breathe?
Because they say it’s easy, just do it like this –
But the ones that are telling us
Teach us because You are our True Father.
Because we are like the trees and You’re our sun.
Because we’re like the stones and You’re the raging brook.
Because we’re like the seeds and You’re the endless earth,
Because we’re the waters always coming back to Your shore.
Teach us because it’s so important.
Because everyone else skipped Chapter One to move on to better things,
Because they were moms and dads wondering about answers just as we ourselves,
Because my teachers didn’t know how to live fully; didn’t know how to live well.
Teach us because knowing how to stand is everything before knowing how to walk,
Teach us, Father, because You said, “let’s make them in the Image of God.”
